About this site

Even though web site is “under construction”, the Sky Tonight page is active and current!  Check it out!

The mission of this site is to provide local advice and information to residents and visitors in regard to backyard stargazing opportunities.

Mariposa County is generally free of a lot of light pollution, and with the dry summer air sometimes the sky is spectacular. The hills can be a hindrance, but there are lots of publicly accessible locations where the view is very broad.

Furthermore, this region was at one time the home of John Frémont, and what many people don’t realize is that his exploratory expeditions in the 1840s were principally geodetic in nature and that what he did was spend many hours gathering astronomical data for the purpose of creating accurate maps. Fremont, in other words, was an astronomer. Therefore this site will often be devoted to the work that he did, and why it was historically important.
